A Partnership of the Community Foundation and Wheeling Jesuit University The Community Foundation for the Ohio Valley and Wheeling Jesuit University have announced a partnership that will offer grantseeking and administrative resources to regional nonprofits to support current operations or expand services. In conjunction with the Foundation Center, Washington, D.C., the Foundation Center resources are now located in the Bishop Hodges Library, located on the University campus. According to Dr. Letha Zook, Dean of Academic Affairs at Wheeling Jesuit University, “Philanthropy improves life quality, and makes communities come to life, as social services, arts and culture, recreation, health care, and education are preserved and promoted. These threads make the fabric of a community strong, colorful, and unique, and can often only be achieved through private support. At Wheeling Jesuit University, we understand service and community, and we are pleased to partner with the Community Foundation to provide resources and information to regional nonprofits who are striving every day to improve the lives of our neighbors.”
The Foundation Center partnership brings a resource of funding that will allow nonprofit organizations to identify additional sources of funding that will allow them to maintain and expand the services they provide.
The Foundation Center offers access to a nationwide network of grantmaker directories, books on fundraising and nonprofit management, and the electronic database of the Foundation, “The Foundation Directory Online.” This fully searchable database includes detailed profiles of all active U.S. Foundations, as well as an extensive file of recent grants awarded by the nation’s top funders. “The Foundation Grants to Individuals Online” allows users to search through detailed descriptions of more than 6,000 foundation and public charity programs that fund students, artists, researchers, and other individual grantseekers.
Access to the Foundation Director Online is available at two computers located in the Foundation Center in the Bishop Hodges Library during regular business hours. Assistance can be requested at the Circulation or Reference Desk.
As an introduction to this new community resource, regional nonprofits were invited to attend a free workshop on Proposal Writing Basics, which was held in the Auditorium of the Robert C. Byrd National Technology Transfer Center at Wheeling Jesuit University on October 23, 2007. The workshop was facilitated by Katrina Brown, Reference Librarian at the Foundation Center Washington, D.C. The presentation covered the basics of proposal writing and submission to funding sources. More sessions will be scheduled in 2008 for nonprofit agencies to attend.
